Since its opening in 2006, the Student Recreation Center at California State University, Fresno has logged more than 1 million visits – providing students and other members of the campus community with a convenient, low-cost avenue to physical fitness.

The center hosts its fifth anniversary celebration from 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 3, with music, prizes, product samples, information tables, refreshments and an open house.

The 92,000 square-foot Student Recreation Center houses two gymnasiums, two racquetball courts, an indoor track, locker rooms, a fitness studio and 13,000 square feet of fitness equipment. Crowds of 1,100-1,400 students daily visit the Rec Center.

In addition to exercise programs and personal training, members can participate in intramural team sports such as basketball, volleyball and indoor soccer. Additional sports at other locations on campus – dodgeball, tennis and softball – are also offered through the center’s intramural program.

In 2000, Fresno States students voted to build the center through a $49 per semester hike in the Student Union Fee. The Rec Center also houses the Leon S. and Pete P. Peters Educational Center, a 300-seat multi-purpose auditorium, and The Lyles Center for Innovation and Entrepreneurship, a resource center for entrepreneurs, inventors and those seeking to further build new business.

Derek Walters, the center‘s director since it opened, said,

“Our programs and services are designed to develop a lifetime interest in recreation and fitness activities. Active and healthy lifestyles enhance opportunities and personal growth.”

And for many students, the Rec Center is a cost-effective, convenient option, said Nicole Nance, a senior Ag Education major from Merced. “The fact that this is included in my fees gives me more incentive to go to the Rec Center as opposed to competitors,” Nance said.

Local gyms can cost upwards of $40 per month, and require a trip of a mile or more from campus. Fresno State employees also can buy memberships for $25 monthly or $250 annually.

Membership is not open to the general public but adult guests, accompanied by a member, are welcome for a $10 per day rate.

The Student Recreaction Center is at 5010 N. Woodrow Ave. (at Shaw Avenue). It’s open 6 a.m.-11 p.m. Monday-Thursday, 6 a.m.- 9 p.m. Friday, 9 a.m.-7 p.m. Saturday and noon- 11 p.m. Sunday.
