California State University, Fresno will host the 53rd annual Peach Blossom Festival of Communication on March 17 and 18, exposing 6,000 central San Joaquin Valley children to oral interpretation and the university campus.

School children travel to Fresno from as far north as Livingston and as far south as Delano to participate. For many of the participants, it’s their first visit to a university campus.

The festival began as a joint effort between the Departments of Speech Communication and the Theatre Arts at Fresno State to help young people realize the importance of reading literature aloud. The day also teaches them about interpretation, performance and being an audience member.

The festival is now run solely by the Department of Communication.

Stacie Moore, the festival coordinator, receives help from students whom she recruits as committee members based upon their attitude, responsibility, dedication and personality. There are two teams: one serving as mentors to the other team.
