The 2011 Faculty Spotlight Concert will be performed at 8 p.m. March 25 at California State University, Fresno, showcasing faculty artists Teresa Beaman (flute), Matthew Darling (percussion), Helene Joseph-Weil (mezzo-soprano) and Thomas Loewenheim (cello).
They will share the Concert Hall stage in the Music Building with collaborative pianist Hatem Nadim in a performance that features works by faculty composers Benjamin Boone (2011 recipient of the President’s Award of Excellence) and Kenneth Froelich.
Beaman and Nadim will be performing Boone’s Latin-American influenced “Jaropa Jam.” Beaman also will perform the romantic work “Suite for Flute and Piano, Opus 34,” by French composer Charles Marie Widor and join Darling and graduate students Sarah Basiletti and Michael Downing on “Mania,” a movement from Froelich’s “Neurotica.”
Darling will preform on marimba, xylophone and various other percussion instruments in five works, three of which were composed solely or in part for him by his faculty colleagues – “Prayer for Peace” by Boone and Froelich’s “Neurotica” and “Accidental Migration.” Darling will also perform “St. Agnes and the Burning Train” by Sting and “Macedonia” by marimbist Nebojsa Zivkovic.
Joseph-Weil and Nadim will perform “The Three B’s,” substituting Boone for Bach in the traditional acknowledgment of the “B” masters (Beethoven and Brahms are the others). Selections will spotlight Beethoven’s little-known Italian songs, three songs composed by Brahms and Boone’s “Con-Man.”
Loewenheim will play Igor Stravinsky’s “Suite Italienne for Cello and Piano,” an arrangement of several movements from the ballet “Pulcinella,” a rewrite in Stravinsky’s energetic style of early 18th century Italian composer Pergolesi’s work.
The concert is open to the community. Tickets – $15 general admission; $5 students – may be purchased online at www.csufresno.edu/music/concerts. Proceeds benefit the music department’s student scholarship fund.
