The San Joaquin Valley’s poverty crisis was addressed at a conference hosted by the California State University, Fresno Department of Social Work Education.

The theme of the one-day conference on Friday, March 18, in downtown Fresno was “War on Poverty, A Dream Deferred.”

Dr. King Davis, social work professor at the University of Texas in Austin and a public mental health expert, headlined the conference. Davis has published numerous articles and reports on mental health, managed healthcare, social justice and impact on related public policies.

Fresno State and Fresno City College professors and educational leaders, led by Dean Andrew Hoff of the College of Health and Human Services at Fresno State, discussed possible solutions to current economic conditions. Included was consideration of collaborative strategies to address challenges in health, housing, families, education, work force and poverty-reduction.

Among the presenters: Howard Himes, deputy director of the Fresno County Department of Social Services; Kelly Woodward, director of Merced County Social Services; Gregory Barfied, Fresno’s homeless prevention and policy manager; and Tracewell Hanrahan of the Fresno Unified School District,
