A time capsule was sealed and buried on Wednesday, May 18, near the Memorial Fountain at California State University, Fresno, scheduled to be unearthed in 2061 for a glimpse at the university’s Centennial Celebration year.

Associated Students Inc. President-elect Selena Farnesi, Yesenia Carrillo of the University Student Union and Fresno State President John D. Welty led a ceremony that preceded capsule’s burial under dirt shoveled by the three. The event is one of the final happenings celebrating Fresno State’s Centennial.

The festivities conclude with the 100th Commencement on Saturday, May 21.

Faculty, students, staff, alumni and the community contributed about 150 items for the capsule – a large metal box designed to resist the underground elements for the next half-century.

Items inside included “A Century of Excellence 1911-2011,” a history book about Fresno State, an autographed football, a selection of logo-emblazoned beverage containers and even a foam finger used by sports fans.

The time capsule was sponsored by ASI and by the USU Board of Directors.
