The modern noir thriller “9 Ball” will headline Fresno State’s B# Video Club showcase premiere The Director’s Cut, 6-8:30 p.m. Friday, May 13.

The black-tie event, complete with red carpet, music and refreshments, will be at the Leon S. and Pete P. Peters Educational Center in the Student Recreation Center west of the Save Mart Center on campus. It is free and open to the public.

The Director’s Cut is the annual showcase of videos made by students majoring in mass communications and journalism. Awards will be given for Best in Show and Audience Favorite.

“9 Ball,” presented by electronic media production students, was written and produced by Andrew Hoover of Fresno, a Slick Rock Film Festival and Telly Award winner, and directed by Lisa Talley also of Fresno. They spent a combined more than four years to develop, write and produce “9 Ball.”

The story follows a group of thugs hunted by a notorious hitman who narrates. He explains to the mob boss exactly how he will go about eliminating the misfit team using a billiards game of 9-ball, each ball corresponding to a goon. Every time he sinks a ball in the game, someone dies.

For The Directors Cut, 15 other videos will be screened, covering a wide range of genres such as narrative, TV/multicam, non-fiction, and music. Each video represents work done by an individual or group of students as class assignments or independent projects.

“The purpose of the showcase is to give students a chance to have their projects seen by a large audience, as well as to celebrate their creativity and hard work,” said Don Priest, mass communications and journalism professor who is the club’s adviser.

“It gives Fresno State students the chance to screen and market their films on the basis of artistic quality.”

B# Video Club is a student run organization whose officers are president Cesar Perez, vice president Lisa Talley, treasurer Johnny Pecina and secretary Frank Cuellar.
