The  first of the 1,100 students who live during the fall 2011 semester at Fresno State’s University Courtyard residence began arriving even before the 9 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 19, official start of the annual move-in activities.

The annual influx of new and returning students, many accompanied by parents, family and friends helped get them settled began, accelerates the anticipation on campus that builds to the beginning of classes on Monday, April 22.

University President John D. Welty and Selena Farnesi, the Associated Students Inc. president,  greeted parents and students. Media gathered to ask the students about their expectations and concerns at the start of an academic year following a summer tuition fee increase and the possible impact of  additional campus budget-cutting.

The move-in activities were scheduled through Sunday, Aug. 21 at University Courtyard, which is home to three community-style halls and six residence suites. There was a busy slate of activities for residents and their families:

  • 1 p.m. Thursday and Friday, Aug. 18-19 – Parents ask questions of University Courtyard senior staff members, Graves Hall lobby.
  • 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Friday – An Information fair at the University Dining Hall provides the 411 on Fresno State clubs and organizations, while  student services vendors give students a glimpse of what’s available to them on campus.
  • 4 p.m. Friday — A workshop at the Atrium lobby offers ideas about furniture arrangements and creative décor for dorm rooms.
  • 4-7 p.m. Thursday – Barbecue, outside University Dining Hall. Welty, Dr. Paul Oliaro, the vice president for student affairs and other top Fresno State officials speak and the Bulldog Marching Band performs.
  • 2 p.m. Saturday – Watermelon Games, Aspen lawn.
  • 9 p.m. Saturday – Casino Game Night, east side of University Dining Hall.
  • 1 p.m. Sunday – Water Games, pool area.
  • 7 p.m. Sunday – Color Games Finale, featuring “The Game of Thrones” and ice cream sundaes.
  • 9:30p.m. Sunday – Exclusive Target shopping event (buses transport residents for shopping).
