California State University, Fresno starts a new century of higher education instruction Monday, Aug. 22,  with 21,655 students, including a record 2,934 freshmen, reports Bernard Vinovrski, associate vice president of enrollment services.

Vinovrski credits an increase in applications and “a great job communicating the strength of our programs” for the number of entering freshmen.

On campus, students will find 132 refurbished classrooms, a soon-to-open Aquatics Center and improvements to the look of the Free Speech area and the University Center. Welcome Week activities run Monday-Thursday, Aug. 22-25.

Vinovrski announced that Fresno State is accepting applications for admission to the spring 2012 semester until Sept. 30, 2011 from upper-division transfer applicants and all returning transfers. Additionally, transfer students may use courses in progress for the fall 2011 semester to establish admission eligibility.

“The use of fall courses is allowed because we recognize that course reductions for summer have affected access to courses that students need to complete requirements for CSU admission,” Vinovrski said.

Fresno State is also open for Graduate and Credential students until Sept 30, he added.

Students who have applied for spring admission are encouraged to check their Fresno State email accounts for information regarding document deadlines.  Questions regarding admission may be directed to 559.278.2161.

For this fall, students will be greeted by volunteers at booths around campus staffed by New Student Orientation leaders designed to help new students find classes and provide them with information needed to navigate first-week issues. Maps, planners and other goodies will be given away at the booths, which will be open 7:30-10:30 a.m. Monday-Thursday.

Welcome Week is presented by the Student Involvement Office, Associated Students Inc. and New Student Orientation.

On Monday, ASI President Selena M. Farnesi will welcome students followed by the ASI’s “Pie the President” event from noon to 2 p.m. at the Free Speech Area Platform to raise awareness of student government.

From 7:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Aug. 22 and 23, the Fresno Vet Center  will display its mobile emergency unit in the Free Speech Area to remind everyone of the services such as counseling for any military-related experiences.

Other new dimensions at Fresno State include:

  • Classroom refurbishing – Over summer break, 132 classrooms got new paint, new technology and other renovation during summer, especially in Social Science Building.
  • New look of Free Speech Area – Extensive work improve the look and fixED cracks and uneven concrete. Pavers were installed to incorporate the look of the rest of the walkway, which is the through-campus extension of Jackson Avenue.
  • University Center facelift – The building east of the Madden Library was remodeled and updated to mesh with other campus designs.
  • Aquatics Center opening – The new center near Bulldog Diamond will be in use this semester by both the swimming and diving team and the Department of Kinesiology.
