Two groups of Fresno State Marketing 188 students are attempting to break two Guinness world records – one for most people wearing sunglasses in the dark and another for longest paper-link chain – while helping two worthy causes.

The Shades at Knight project hopes that 1,000 people attending the Fresno Monsters hockey game at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 3, can be persuaded to put on sunglasses to break the record Guinness now lists of 424 people. The game will be played in downtown Fresno’s Selland Arena.

To break the record, participants must wear the sunglasses in the dark simultaneously for a minimum of 10 minutes. Fans will get a start and finish signal. Time will be kept by an athletic clock as well as by people using stopwatches. The 10 minutes that people have it made in their shades will be preserved on video to help document the record attempt.

Admission to the game is $10 and there is a $20 fundraiser package offering a ticket, t-shirt and sunglasses. Proceeds will help pay to renovate King Arthur’s Castle at Rotary Storyland and Playland at Roeding Park in Fresno.

A second marketing-student project, Links of Love, will assemble paper links into a chain from 10 a.m. Friday to 10 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 2-3, at a warehouse in downtown Fresno. If students and volunteers can assemble enough of the 18-inch paper links to stretch past 54.33 miles, they’ll lay claim to the record.

People have purchased links and made donations that will benefit the Make-A-Wish Foundation.
