A new series of lectures and presentations by Fresno State faculty exploring cultural practices, productions and traditions throughout the Americas will debut at 12:30 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 27, at the Henry Madden Library, Room 3212.
“From Cantina to Concert Hall: Mariachi and the Transformation of a Tradition” is the inaugural offering of the Cultures of the Americas Colloquium. The presenter is by Dr. Donald Henriques, an assistant professor of music and director of the Fresno State Mariachi.
Henriques earned a bachelor’s degree in music performance from California State University, East Bay; a master’s in music composition from Indiana University, Bloomington; and a doctorate in ethnomusicology from the University of Texas at Austin. He joined the Fresno State faculty in 2006.
His research focuses on mariachi and media industries such as radio, sound recordings and film from the late 1920s through the 1950s.
The colloquium is presented by Literatures, Arts and Cultures of the Americas, an interdisciplinary initiative designed to bring together research-active scholars and artists at Fresno State.
