Marketing students ‘unofficially’ break salsa world-record; cereal attempt is Dec. 12

A team of Fresno State marketing students completed what is believed to be the world’s largest serving of salsa Friday night when they mixed 3,626 pounds passing the standing world record of 2,672 pounds set in Texas in 2010.

Working at PR Farms in Clovis, the students surpassed their own goal of 3,500.  The team will submit its claim to Guinness World Records for verification, which takes 4-6 weeks. SALSA INFO: Karen Garcia at 559.824.9327.

Another team will attempt to make the world’s largest bowl of cereal at 1 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 12, at Fresno State’s O’Neill Park (Barstow and Woodrow),  the last of five projects by students in Dr. William Rice’s Marketing Strategies class aimed at shattering Guinness World Records marks. Full release to come Monday. CEREAL INFO: Trent Ewert at trent.ewert@gmail.com.

Two other teams attempting world records for the class also reached their goal: on Dec. 1,  the largest dessert party team reached its goal of 774 people, serving 3,396 desserts, and  the largest cup of lemonade team  made1,620 gallons.

Fresno State marketing students hope world records will fall with four efforts beginning this week to break Guinness World Records™. The fun begins Thursday (Nov. 29), when one team will attempt to make the world’s largest chocolate mousse beginning at 7 p.m. at the Fresno Rescue Mission, 310 G St. The students plan to have it completed by 10 a.m. Friday.

On Saturday, Dec. 1, two teams will attempt the largest cup of lemonade and largest dessert party, both at the Children’s Electric Christmas Parade in Clovis. The fourth project, the world’s largest serving of salsa, will be attempted Dec. 7

Each project is undertaken by students in the “Strategic Marketing” class taught by Dr. William Rice of the Department of Management and Marketing in the Craig School of Business. Students are assigned to conduct major marketing campaigns, such as world record attempts. The projects sometimes benefit a charitable cause, are free and open to the public and rely on donations and sponsorships.

Students work with the university’s Environmental Health and Safety, Risk Management Office to learn about and address food product safety and liability risks.

For this semester’s first attempt, the students’ goal is to make a 1,000-pound chocolate mousse. The record is a 313-pound chocolate mousse, set in France in 2010.

The largest cup of lemonade attempt Saturday will be from 10 a.m.-8 p.m. in Old Town Clovis in the parking lot at the intersection of Bullard and Pollasky avenues. The team has a goal of 2,000 gallons of lemonade and will juice 40,000 lemons in preparation.

After the parade, the largest dessert party hopes 800 people will come to the Clovis Veterans Memorial Building, 808 4th St., to help break the current record of 740 that was set August 2012 by Physicians Mutual in Omaha. Begining at 8:15 p.m. free desserts  will be provided, including cupcakes, brownies, cheesecakes, éclairs and cookies provided by Frosted Cakery, Cakes by Amberly, Rich’s Brownie Baker, Bee’s Bites and members of  the Marketing 188 class.

The world’s largest serving of salsa will be attempted 9 a.m.-3 p.m. Dec. 7 at PR Farms in Clovis, 2917 E. Shepherd Ave., where students will attempt to surpass the 2,672 record by serving 3,500 pounds of salsa.

In previous years, marketing students have promoted everything from the largest recycled Bulldog to one of the biggest attempts that didn’t succeed, the spring 2011 water balloon fight that drew thousands of people to campus.

This summer, Guinness World Records ™ verified two submissions from last year giving Fresno State marketing students the record for the World’s Largest Smoothie attempted in spring 2012 and the World’s Largest Fruit Salad attempted in fall 2011.
