The Fresno State students of Kappa Kappa Gamma sorority will present a fundraising 16-team softball tournament beginning at 9 a.m. Sunday, Nov. 4, at the Clovis West High School JV softball fields, to benefit two programs battling childhood illiteracy.
The sorority’s efforts are among many similar ventures undertaken by fraternity and sorority students annually. In the 2011-2012 academic year, sorority and fraternity Fresno State students volunteered more than 10,000 community service hours, reports Eddie Dominguez, Greek Life adviser in the university’s Division of Student Affairs.
The fraternity and sorority students also raised more than $70,000 for a variety of causes.
The 22nd annual Kappa Kappa Gamma softball tournament, pitting teams from Fresno State chapters of fraternities and sororities, will benefit Reading is Fundamental’s books-for-children program, and Stone Soup, a community organization serving the El Dorado Park area west of campus. Each team pays a $100 entry fee.
Kappa Kappa Gamma also supports Stone Soup though holiday reading parties at its preschool and donations of reading supplies.
Danae Wells, a junior child development major from Hanford and Kappa Kappa Gamma, said volunteering time at Stone Soup is rewarding. “Being able to pass on my own skills and talents to these children has left a lasting impression that I will always cherish,” Wells said. “Without donations from the public, none of this would be possible.”
The tournament is free and open to the public.
