Benefits and evils of social media conversation, Jan. 25

Explore the importance of social media and its potential threats at a presentation and discussion, 7 p.m., Friday, Jan. 25 at Fresno State’s Madden Library, 2nd Floor, South Wing, Auditorium room 2206. A reception will be held prior to the event, from    6-7 p.m., 2nd Floor, North Wing. Guest speakers Robert Sullivan, an attorney with McCormick Barstow LLP, and Jefferson Beavers, who teaches journalism, film and writing at Fresno City College, will describe social media, how it is used and why it is so important. They will also address its downsides and how individuals can protect themselves from identity theft and fraud. Parking on campus is free for this event. Reservations are required by Jan. 22. This is the third program in the Friends of the Madden Library’s 2012-2013 series Technology and Culture: Progress or Peril. The Friends of Madden Library is a non-profit organization established to support, promote, and raise funds for the programs and collections at Fresno State’s Library.

    The Forum will now be hosted by: Robert Sullivan and Jefferson Beavers.
    Jefferson Beavers teaches journalism, film, and writing courses at Fresno City College. He is also the communication director for Fresno Filmworks and a freelance producer for The California Report. Jefferson has taught journalism classes and advised student media at Fresno State, has hosted a weekly music show on the Fresno State radio station.
    Robert Sullivan was Editor-In-Chief of the University of San Francisco Law Review. Mr. Sullivan’s primary area of practice if Estate Planning and Probate. Mr. Sullivan has worked with lawmakers, academics and judges to advance legislative proposals for informal administration of decedents’ estates.
