The spring 2014 issue of FresnoState Magazine hits mailboxes this week, offering readers an in-depth look at how a successful athletics program can spark the university’s overall success by providing an opportunity to engage with more students, their parents and community members.

The cover story suggests a correlation between athletic success at Fresno State and student interest in attending the university — as well as a boost in alumni donations. Several scholar athletes are featured for their wins in and out of the classroom.

“I know some people love one or the other more, but

[academics and athletics] are both so important to the university, community and Valley,” said Fresno State President Joseph I. Castro. “I want academics and athletics to rise together, and I want us to invest more in both areas.”

The magazine also offers a look at the university’s recent investment in a tablet program, an initiative Castro proposed when he began his presidency in August. The tablet program — DISCOVERe — launched with 40 faculty fellows incorporating tablets in their classrooms.

From cover to cover, the issue features a diverse group of students, alumni, faculty and friends who are making a difference at the university and beyond. A feature on the Fresno Family Counseling Center gives a behind-the-scenes look at a group of students and faculty who are determined to fill a void and provide low-cost counseling services to the community.

Plus, readers can learn about a new device on campus to improve air quality research and how the university is approaching the future of the pistachio industry.

FresnoState Magazine is a biannual publication of the Office of University Communications at Fresno State. The award-winning magazine is published online and distributed by mail to a select list of Fresno State alumni, supporters and friends.
