The Henry Madden Library at Fresno State expanded its digitized collection to include university yearbooks and “The Collegian” student newspaper.  These historic publications that document student life at Fresno State are now available free to the public online.

Fresno State published its first annual yearbook commemorating the academic year in 1911. First called “The Prospect,” the publication’s name changed to “The Collegian” in 1922, and finally to “Campus” in 1924.

Except for a brief gap from 1972-75, the yearbook was published annually until 1991. “This collection of Fresno State yearbooks stands as a treasure trove of photographs, information and memories,” said university librarian Patrick Newell.

Printed copies of the yearbooks are also available for check out from the main stacks of the Henry Madden Library and available for in-house use from the Special Collections Research Center.

Today, “The Collegian” is the student-run newspaper that covers university-related news and events. The newspaper gives students an opportunity to present their perspectives on news, opinion, sports, features and entertainment.

Designed as a laboratory classroom for students interested in print and online journalism, “The Collegian” has been under the umbrella of the Department of Mass Communication and Journalism since fall 1998.

The Henry Madden Library houses the complete collection of “The Collegian” on microfilm going back to 1922. In a three-year project, the library digitized the entire microfilm collection from 1922-1998, which is now available online.

The public can now browse the suggested topics to discover what news made the front pages throughout the publication’s history.

Current issues of “The Collegian” are also available online with back issues dating to fall 2009.
