The Fresno State Winery won a gold medal for its locally-grown 2007 Saviez Syrah at this year’s Pacific Rim Wine Competition in San Bernardino. It will be available for tasting this weekend.

The Pacific Rim Wine Competition included over 30 professional wine judges who conducted blind tastings of more than 2,000 wines on April 24. Gold medal and best of class wines will be poured at the National Orange Show Fair May 22-26 in San Bernardino.

The student winery also won silver medals at the competition for its 2011 California Syrah and 2010 Zinfandel. And, earlier this year, Fresno State won a silver medal for the Legacy Classic Chardonnay at the Consumer Wine Awards in Lodi March 22.

All four wines will be opened for tasting and available for purchase at the Rue and Gwen Gibson Farm Market Tasting Room from 1-5 p.m. May 3-4 (5368 N. Chestnut Ave.).

The fruit for the Pacific Rim gold medal wine is sourced from Saviez Vineyards in Fresno County, one of several grower partners with Fresno State’s Viticulture and Enology Department in the Jordan College of Agricultural Sciences and Technology.

The processing and production is handled by Fresno State enology students under the guidance of winemaker John Giannini. The winery on Barstow Avenue was the first bonded commercial winery to operate on a university campus in the nation. Fresno State wines have won nearly 600 awards since the license was obtained in 1997.

“The Saviez Syrah is a very big wine, with velvety tannins, toasted plum, blackberry and a subtle, smokey, background with hints of vanilla,” said Kevin Smith, business and marketing manager. “It is a great standalone wine, or can be paired with a simple black peppered steak.”

In addition to the Gibson Farm Market, the wine is available for purchase online at www.fresnostatewines.com.

The market is open 9 a.m.-6 p.m. Monday-Friday; 9 a.m.-4 p.m. Saturday; and 11 a.m.-4 p.m. Sunday. Parking is free at the market.
