Wrestling club wins first NCWA state championship

The Fresno State wrestling club team won the 2015 California state championship on Feb. 14, beating out second- and third-place finishers UCLA and USC.

Six Fresno State wrestlers won individual state champion titles.

Sponsored by the National Collegiate Wrestling Association, the competition was hosted by Fresno State and, in addition to UCLA and USC, drew club teams from Cal State San Marcos, UC Santa Barbara, UC Merced and Sacramento State.

Fresno State took the state title with 158.5 points, while UCLA finished with 101 points and USC with 88 points.

Six Fresno State wrestlers were crowned state champions in their respective weight classes with one second-place finish and two third-place finishes.

The six state champions are Brandon Rodrigues of Clovis (125 pounds), Davit Gevorgyan of Fresno (157), Mason Temple of Clovis (165), Cameron MacLeod of Stockton (184), Jesus Izazaga of Hilmar (197) and Jesus Marez-Lopez of Sanger (285). Rodrigues and McLeod won by default due to lack of competitors in those classes.

Taking second was Jose Maldonado (235). Third-place finishers were Jovany Gonzalez (149) and Kevin Perreira (165).

The club is part of the Fresno State club sports program which includes bowling, cycling, fishing, men’s and women’s rugby, men’s soccer, trap and skeet, men’s volleyball, men’s and women’s water polo wrestling and more.

Club sports are student-initiated and student-managed organizations formed around shared interest in a sport. They are administered though the Division of Student Affairs and are not part of the Athletics Department. Teams compete with other university club sports teams through independent organizations.

The Fresno State club sports program is home to several national championships, including the 2013 men’s volleyball and 2011 bowling clubs.

The wrestling club has 15 members and in 2013 gained affiliation with the National Collegiate Wrestling Association’s West Coast Conference which includes various universities through the state.
