Rachel Nieto, a senior majoring in biology, participated in a prestigious summer internship at the University of Münster through the German Academic Exchange Service RISE program. Working alongside a doctoral student at the Institute for Molecular Virology, Nieto spent the summer researching the cellular export of Influenza Virus A viral ribonucleoproteins (vRNPs), the essential genetic portion of the influenza virus. Her work involved establishing methods for the detection of the cellular export during the later stage of the infection. The program offers summer research internships in Germany to about 300 students from the U.S., Canada and the United Kingdom each year. Nieto was the first Fresno State student to be selected.
