The Henry Madden Library at Fresno State continues the sixth season of its Noontime

Concert Series with a performance by Dr. Corey Whitehead at 12:10 p.m. today (Dec. 2), in the Table Mountain Rancheria Reading Room in the library.

Whitehead (a.k.a. Corey England) is the artistic director and coordinator for the Noontime Concert Series. He will be performing from his new album.

Whitehead was chosen by flamenco icon Manolo Sanlúcar to receive a full scholarship to study in Córdoba at “La forma y naturaleza de la guitarra flamenco” and is the only U.S. guitarist to be chosen twice (2009 and 2010).

In 2002, Whitehead received his doctor of musical arts in music performance under the guidance of professor Thomas Patterson and David Russell. Since then he has studied extensively with Cordoba-born flamenco guitarist Juan Serrano, legendary Sanlúcar and with such luminaries as Manolo Franco, José Antonio Rodriguez, Juan Carlos Romero and Paco Serrano. Whitehead’s book, “The Flamenco/Classical Guitar Tradition” is co-authored with Serrano.

In 2006, after an international search, Whitehead was appointed Serrano’s Fresno State successor and has received international acclaim for his program direction, which is still widely considered one of the top flamenco guitar programs in the nation. Fresno State is the only institution in the Americas that offers a degree in music performance with an emphasis on flamenco guitar studies.

In addition to Whitehead’s work in the classical and flamenco genres, he actively collaborates with musicians in pop, jazz and rock.

Seating is limited and parking is restricted. Parking permits can be obtained from a parking kiosk on campus.
