Poets, writers and friends of Mireyda “Mia” Barraza Martinez will gather for an open mic poetry reading and vigil at 5:30 p.m., Tuesday, Dec. 6 at the Fresno City College main fountain (1101 E. University Ave.). Ms. Barraza Martinez, a Fresno State teaching associate in the Department of English and a graduate assistant to U.S. Poet Laureate Juan Felipe Herrera, died Nov. 20 in an auto accident. The vigil encourages any style of sharing — including poetry, music and stories — to remember and celebrate the life and work of Ms. Barraza Martinez, a graduate student in Fresno State’s Master of Fine Arts Program in Creative Writing who got her start as a poet while attending Fresno City College. Parking for the vigil will be free in Lot D starting at 5 p.m. INFO: Dr. Jennifer Dorian at 559.442.4600, extension 8008. Original story: http://bit.ly/FSN-MiaBarrazaMartinez.
