Armenian musician Richard Hagopian, an internationally recognized master of the oud, will present a lecture called “Maqam Musics of the Middle East: Armenian Traditions” at 4 p.m. Thursday, April 27, in the Alice Peters Auditorium (PB 191) in the Peters Business Building. This free, public event is part of the Middle East Studies Lecture, Performance and Film Series, and is co-sponsored by the Armenian Studies Program and Department of Music‘s Global Music Lecture Series. Hagopian began playing the oud – a short-neck stringed instrument commonly used in Middle Eastern music – at a young age. He has received numerous awards during his life, including the prestigious National Endowment for the Arts National Heritage Fellowship Award in 1989, the nation’s highest honor given in the traditional folk arts.
