CineCulture will present “The Other Side of Home” at 5:30 p.m. Friday, April 20, in the Peters Education Center Auditorium at the Student Recreation Center (5010 N. Woodrow Ave.). The post-screening discussion will be led by Naré Mkrtchyan, who directed and produced the film. This documentary-style film tells of a Turkish woman named Maya who finds out that her great grandmother was a survivor of the Armenian Genocide. She makes this discovery 100 years after the events of the genocide took place when an estimated 1.5 million Armenians were killed by the Ottoman Turks in 1915. Maya’s experience of embodying these conflicting sides is shown in the documentary when she decides to visit Armenia to participate in the 100th commemoration of the genocide as a way of exploring her conflicted identity. The film creates a powerful story surrounding the struggles of identity, denial and the rippling effects of genocide that remain for the generations following the horrifying experience.
