A production of “The Vagina Monologues” will be staged at California State University, Fresno to raise funds and promote awareness for ending violence against women and girls as part of V-Day 2010.
People Organized for Women’s Empowerment and Representation (POWER) and the Women’s Alliance at Fresno State are sponsoring “The Vagina Monologues” at 7 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 27, and Sunday, Feb. 28 at the Satellite Student Union.
Proceeds from the event – admission is $5 for students and $10 for general public – will be shared by the Marjaree Mason Center in Fresno and the Fresno State Violence Prevention Project. Tickets can be purchased at Fresno State’s Center for Women and Culture or at the door.
It’s part of a global movement that uses playwright/founder Eve Ensler’s award-winning play “The Vagina Monologues” and other artistic works for V-Day fundraising.
V-Day, which stands for victory, Valentine and vagina, has raised more than $70 million. In 2009, more than 4,200 V-Day benefits were produced by volunteer activists around the world.
“V-Day strives to empower women to find their collective voices and demand an end to the violence that affects one in three women in the U.S and around the world,” said Fresno State student Allexanderia Verdian, who is a performer and co-director of the campus production.
