Public art is in the spotlight as the second week of the 2007 California State University Summer Arts program begins Sunday, July 8, at California State University, Fresno.

A panel discussion at 2 p.m. Sunday in the Conley Lecture Hall of the Phebe Conley Art Building will consider the need for and current trends in public installations.

And on Monday, July 9, Lita Albuquerque, who is internationally known for her public artistic installations and as an artist and sculptor, will lecture at 8 p.m. at the Fresno Art Museum.

Albuquerque is among the master teachers for a two-week course in public art as part of the Summer Arts program that will culminate at 2 p.m. Friday, July 13, with a tour of installations by students.

Student culminations end each of the two-week series of classes taught by visual and performing arts experts, giving the participants an opportunity to display or perform in their specialties. The class leaders perform, lecture and present in public events as well.

Also on the week’s public schedule:

Wednesday, July 11: Steve Thachuk (guitar) and Sarah Wass (flute) in concert.

Thursday, July 12: Student culmination in television production features live presentation of the political drama, “The Members.”

Friday, July 13: Student culminations in comic books/graphic novels, dance (with guest artist nicholasleichterdance), experimental theater (with Mabou Mines) and improvisational performance (with Second City).
