University High School, a charter academy on the California State University, Fresno campus, is ranked 36th among 18,000 public high schools by U.S. News & World Report.

University High is the only public high school in the San Joaquin Valley ranked among the top 100 by the magazine in its survey to be published Dec. 10.

U.S. News & World Report collaborated with School Evaluation Services to analyze academic and enrollment data to determine which best prepare students across a range of disciplines for postsecondary success.

University High ranked seventh among the 23 California high schools listed in the top 100.

“UHS is excited to hear of this honor,” said Dr. James Bushman, head of school. “We think this is a great tribute to our multitalented hard-working student body, supportive parents and terrific teaching staff.”

“We have long felt that the synergy our little school has generated provides for an exciting educational environment that is enriching to all of us, so this is a very nice recognition.”

Founded in 2000, University High School has an enrollment of 391 students. Of their 2007 graduating class, 97 percent went to college – 13.5 percent to Fresno State – and 24 percent to four-year colleges outside the University of California and California State University systems.

Said Bushman, “Our students routinely attend a wide array of four-year colleges including Stanford and Harvard and many smaller private and public schools.”

The transition to college is made easier by the unique relationship between University High and Fresno State. While the high school has its own teachers for the college preparatory curriculum, some students are enrolled in university classes. All University High students also are able to use the university library, science laboratories, music and other Fresno State facilities.

University High School, which is chartered through the Fresno Unified School District, has a board of trustees comprised of Fresno State faculty, community members and a parent.
