Matt Garza, a star Fresno State pitcher in 2004 and ’05, pitched the first Major League no-hitter by a former Bulldog and the first in his team’s 12-year history as the Tampa Bay Rays defeated Detroit 5-0 on Monday, July 26.

Garza, 26, was born in Selma and came to Fresno State from Washington Union High School in Easton.

Garza was the 2005 Western Athletic Conference Pitcher of the Year and a first-round pick – No. 25 – by the Minnesota Twins after his junior season at Fresno State.
