Los Angeles-based jazz singer Raquel Rodriguez comes back to her roots when she performs with her band “The Big Guys” at the Fresno State Chicano Alumni chapter‘s “A Night of Soulful Jazz with Attitude,” 7-11:30 p.m. Friday, Sept. 6, at the Veterans Memorial Ballroom in Clovis (808 4th Street).

Rodriguez’ parents and family are from the San Joaquin Valley and eagerly await her performance, said aunt Delma Garcia, a retired Fresno State Outreach counselor.

Tickets for the scholarship fundraiser are $25. Proceeds benefit the Chicano Alumni Chapter Scholarship Fund.

Rodriguez is an alumna of Los Angeles’ prestigious Hamilton High School Academy of Music. She recently graduated from the University of Southern California’s Thornton School of Music with a bachelor’s degree in Music Industry with an emphasis in Jazz Studies.

Chicano Alumni is a chapter the Fresno State Alumni Association. Among its accomplishment is the creation of one of the nation’s first Latino commencement celebrations in 1977. That event is now sponsored by the College of Social Sciences.
