Fresno State President Joseph I. Castro has ordered that the university flags be flown at half-staff Thursday, May 15 in honor of Peace Officers Memorial Day in keeping with the national commemoration proclaimed by President Obama “as a sign of respect to those in law enforcement who have lost their lives while serving to protect our communities.”

He noted California Highway Patrol Officer Juan Jaime Gonzalez and his partner Officer Brian Law who died in February while responding to a vehicle accident on Highway 99. Gonzalez, a 2004 graduate, will be honored at the Latino Commencement Celebration Saturday night (May 17) at the Save Mart Center. He participated in that celebration when he graduated and for many years was a volunteer through his fraternity, Nu Alpha Kappa (NAK).

Law’s widow, Rebecca, is a graduate student in the Kremen School of Education and Human Development Rehabilitation Counseling Program.

Also, May 11-17 is Police Week.

“The university community extends its gratitude and appreciation for the service provided by the officers and staff of the Fresno State Police Department as well as law enforcement forces throughout the nation,” Castro said.
