Richard Hagopian, a Fowler native who is an internationally-recognized master of the oud, will present a lecture entitled “Melodic and Rhythmic Considerations in Oud Performance” at 4 p.m. Thursday, April 16 at the Alice Peters Auditorium in the Peters Business Building (5245 N. Backer Avenue). The free, public event is part of the Music Department‘s Global Music Lecture Series. Hagopian has recorded four dance albums, “Kef Time” series (style of dance music popular among the Armenian-American community), and an album of Armenian composers produced by ARC Music in Europe. Born into an Armenian family that fled to the United States after the Armenian Genocide, Hagopian began playing the oud at a young age. He has received numerous awards including the prestigious National Endowment for the Arts National Heritage Fellowship Award, the nation’s highest honor given in the traditional folk arts.
