Jerry Wainwright, associate head coach for the Fresno State men’s basketball team, was featured in a Wall Street Journal article published Wednesday, Oct. 14, for sending inspiring handwritten notes to former players and coaches.
The article says Wainwright, 68, has sent 300 to 500 notes each week over the span of his 30-year coaching career.
“I love getting a personal letter because I know what went into sending it,” he says. “It’s such a great compliment.”
Many of the recipients have kept these letters and shared how Wainwright’s words inspired them. As a head coach for 16 years, Wainwright led his teams to seven postseason tournaments.
He served as the Bulldogs’ associate head coach during the 2011-12 season and most recently coached at Marquette University as an assistant coach from 2012-14.
