Recent Fresno State graduate Alexander Tran of Fresno is among 57 students nationwide to be awarded a fellowship from The Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi. Tran earned a bachelor’s degree in biology from Fresno State in May. He will use the $5,000 fellowship award when he attends medical school at Saint Louis University this fall. A member of the Smittcamp Family Honors College, Tran was the national Phi Kappa Phi Council of Students representative in 2014 and recipient of the John D. Welty Scholarship from the Fresno State chapter in 2013. Tran, who graduated from Clovis West High School, wants to become a doctor to work with patients who have encountered barriers within the health system and lack access to a source of primary care. Phi Kappa Phi is the nation’s oldest and most selective collegiate honor society for all academic disciplines. The Fellowship Program provides funds to deserving students for first-year graduate or professional study.
