Chicano Education Symposium features Latino state justices

The Honorable Dr. Mariano Florentino Cuellar, California Supreme Court Justice, will lead two panels of legal and education experts discussing the “Historical Impact of Case Law and Legislation on the Education of Chicano/Latino Student in the Central Valley” at a symposium from 1 to 5 p.m., Friday, Oct. 27, in the Satellite Student Union at Fresno State .

Presented by the Dr. Cecilio Orozco Research and Policy Center, the symposium is free and open to the public by reservation.

The primary purpose of the symposium is to convene Chicano/Latino education and political leaders and address ways to improve the state of education by examining three key premises:

  • Whether the lower educational achievement of Students of Color in preK-12 results from institutional policies and practices rooted in racism
  • Whether adverse childhood experiences imposed by the educational systems impede students of color in the Central San Joaquin Valley
  • What ought be done to solve these problems

Co-sponsors include the Fresno State’s College of Arts and Humanities and the Latina/o faculty and Staff Association as well as the California Latino Leadership Network, El Concilio de Fresno, Inc., and the Education and Leadership Foundation.

Joining Justice Cuellar for his 3:10 p.m. panel, “Brown v. Board of Education and Education Equity and Equality in the 21st Century,” will be the Honorable Rosendo Peña, associate justice of the California Fifth District Court of Appeal, and the Honorable Cruz Reynoso, former associate justice of the California Supreme Court

The first panel at 1:10 p.m., “Case Law and Legislation on the Education of Chicano/Latino Students,” will feature Dr. Jose Luis Santos, founder and president of JLS Strategies Group, LLC, a consulting firm in the Washington, D. C.; Joel M. Murillo, a Fowler attorney who also is president of the Orozco Research Center and the La Raza Lawyers Association, Fresno chapter; and Dr. Luis Fernando Macias, a professor in the Chicano/Latin American Studies Department at Fresno State whose expertise research includes social justice education.

The event begins with a welcome at 1 p.m. by Murillo and James L. Rodgers, senior member of Orozco Research Center.
