Fresno State’s commemoration of Human Rights Day at 8:30 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 9, will feature Dolores Huerta, president of the Dolores Huerta Foundation, and Amanda Renteria, chief of operations for the California Department of Justice.

The free, public event will be held at the North Gym (Room 118) with Huerta delivering a special message and Renteria delivering the keynote address. Mary Castro, wife of Fresno State President Joseph I. Castro, will welcome the participants.

Human Rights Day, observed worldwide every year on Dec. 10, commemorates the day the United Nations General Assembly adopted the Universal Declaration of Human Rights in 1948. The local event is presented by the Human Rights Coalition of Central California and is part of the Leon S. Peters Ethics Lecture Series.

This year’s theme is “Women’s Rights are Human Rights: Together We Rise” with panel discussions and lectures on the importance of women’s rights.

Speakers include Carol Goldsmith, president of Fresno City College; Francine Oputa, director of Fresno State’s Cross Cultural and Gender Center; Patsy Montgomery, associate vice president of legislative campaigns for Planned Parenthood; and Nicole Linder, executive director of Marjaree Mason Center.

Renteria, an American political aide, has worked with United States senators Dianne Feinstein and Debbie Stabenow. She is also the first Latina chief of staff of the U.S. Senate.

She was the Democratic nominee for the United States House of Representatives from California’s 21st congressional district in 2014. Renteria was Hillary Clinton’s national political director in 2016.

As chief of operations for state Attorney General Xavier Becerra, Renteria oversees 1,000 state Department of Justice employees who provide support to 3,500 attorneys.

Campus parking is free on weekends (Lot P24 is nearest).
