California State University, Fresno said today it “accepts with great sadness” the Fresno Police Department’s preliminary findings that Omar Nemeth, a 19-year-old student who died Wednesday while visiting a campus fraternity, succumbed of an apparent accidental overdose of prescription medication.

Nemeth, a sophomore majoring in biochemistry, was found in an unresponsive state Wednesday afternoon and was driven to Saint Agnes Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead. Fresno Police Chief Jerry Dyer said his department’s preliminary investigation indicates Nemeth died of an apparent overdose of Xanax and possibly other drugs found in his possession. The official cause of death will be determined by the Fresno County Coroner’s Office after toxicology tests are completed in about four weeks.

Nemeth was not a member of the fraternity, Delta Sigma Phi, but had gone there early Wednesday morning, along with his brother and girlfriend, to visit a friend.

Details related to the incident, as released Wednesday afternoon by Chief Dyer, are here.
