Fresno State’s national and state flags will fly at half-staff Saturday, June 9, the day of funeral services for former California Gov. George Deukmejian, who died May 8 at 89-years-old. Services will be held at Terrace Theater in Long Beach beginning at 1 p.m., June 9. Deukmejian was born in New York in 1928, after his parents, who were Armenian immigrants, fled to the United States to escape the Armenian genocide. Deukmejian began his political rise in 1962 with his election to the Assembly. He was elected to be California’s 35th governor in 1982, where he spent the next nine years integrating his tough crime approach. Deukmejian’s legacy and memory is survived by his wife of 61 years, Gloria, their three children and six grandchildren. See Long Beach Post story
