The Food Science and Nutrition Department at Fresno State is conducting a research study investigating the impact of fresh fruits and vegetables on diet-related diseases such as obesity, cardiovascular disease, Type 2 diabetes, cancer and related health care expenses.

Student participants who are experiencing food insecurity and are overweight or obese will be screened for their diet-related illness eligibility based on their body mass index and waist circumference.

Participants will have access to nutrition education, cooking classes and grocery tours led by both campus nutrition faculty and students. Additionally, participants may receive a box of fresh fruits and vegetables weekly for six months or a gift card for Save Mart Supermarket. The study requires a one-year commitment, but participants are free to withdraw at any time.

The project is part of a three-year, $500,000 grant by the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Gus Schumacher Nutrition Incentive Program. Additional program support is provided by the Nutrition Incentive Hub.
