Health care reform efforts in California will be the topic this month of “The Maddy Report,” a public affairs series produced by KSEE, Channel 24, with the Maddy Institute at California State University, Fresno.

The program will air Saturday, Oct. 13, and Oct. 20 on KSEE at 7 p.m., and on KVPR public radio’s “Quality of Life” program Tuesday, Oct. 16, from 10 to 11 a.m.

Panelists discussing the issue will be Marian Mulkey, senior program officer with the California Health Care Foundation; Deborah Riordan, senior policy analyst with the Central Valley Health Policy Institute at California State University, Fresno; Jan Emerson, vice president of the California Hospital Association; and Scott Hauge, president of Small Business California.

Also on the panel will be Maddy Institute board members Don Jackson, chairman; Jim Boren, editorial page editor for the Fresno Bee; and Diane Dooley, president and CEO of the California Children’s Hospital Association.

“Health care reform is a crucial issue because an estimated 6.7 million Californians were without health insurance last year,’ said Mark Keppler, director of the Maddy Institute.

“Because of our higher poverty levels, higher unemployment rates and large number of undocumented residents, the Valley is home to more of the uninsured than other areas of the state,” said Keppler, who is also a management professor at Fresno State.

Panelists will examine the health care proposals being discussed in Sacramento, who would be covered, how much the proposals would cost and who will pay.

“The Maddy Report,” which debuted in 2006, has tackled important regional and state issues including water, air quality and the California Partnership for the San Joaquin Valley. It is a production of The Kenneth L. Maddy Institute at California State University, Fresno.

The health care program also will be rebroadcast on the Comcast public affairs channel throughout the Valley.

The Maddy Institute was established in 1999 by the California Legislature in honor of State Senator Ken Maddy, whose 28 years of public service established the successful application of individual integrity, legislative information and is bipartisanship to the governance of California.

The Maddy Institute’s mission includes providing non-partisan, interdisciplinary and fact-driven analysis of public policy issues impacting our region and state. The institute also provides practical training for local officials and civic leaders, internships for Fresno State students with local state and federal legislators, as well as symposia and extension courses on a range of topics relating to public policy and public administration.
