The Collegian, California State University, Fresno’s student newspaper, won 11 awards in the California College Media Association competition, including Best Editorial and Best Group Promotion, placing the three-times-weekly publication among the state’s collegiate best.

“Putting out a high-quality newspaper under constant pressure from deadlines is not easy,” said Reaz Mahmood, the Collegian adviser. “Our students work so hard and with such great enthusiasm. It’s incredibly gratifying to see their dedication and service recognized in the company of some of the most elite academic programs in the state.”

Fresno State competes in the large-circulation category against such schools as the University of Southern California, University of California at Berkeley, UCLA, San Diego State and San Jose State.

  • Best News, Non-breaking: “Switching Out” (March 6) by Heather Billings, third.
  • Best Editorial: “Our View: Execs Not Exempt” (Oct. 16), Collegian staff, first.
  • Best Photo Illustration: “NCAA 2010” (Sept. 2) by Matt Weir, second.
  • Best Photo Series: (Feb. 9) by Bryan Cole, second.
  • Best News Page Design: (Dec. 7) by Jakob Smith, third.
  • Best Feature Page Design: “Caffeine Crazy” (March 18) by Valerie Nevens, second.
  • Best Infographic: Library Survey (Dec. 2) by Brandon Ocegueda, third.
  • Best Sports Page Design: (Feb. 4) by Logan Hopkins and George Stepanoff Jr., second.
  • Best Special Section: Spring Fashion (April 22), Collegian advertising, third.
  • Best Group Promotion: (Oct. 14), Collegian staff, first.

Awards were presented at the annual California College Media Association banquet held April 17 at Hearst Castle. The California College Media Association was founded in 2003 by media and journalism faculty and advisers to support media and communications programs in California higher education.
