Erica Kohl-Arenas, author of the recently published book “The Self-Help Myth: How Philanthropy Fails to Alleviate Poverty,” will speak at Fresno State from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Wednesday, April 6, in the University Student Union (Room 312). The “Self-Help Myth” reveals how philanthropy maintains systems of inequality by attracting attention to the behaviors and responsibilities of poor people while shifting the focus away from structural inequities and relationships of power that produce poverty. The book examines migrant poverty in the Central Valley and the enduring abuses of farmworkers and immigrants. Kohl-Arenas is an assistant professor at the Milano School of International Affairs, Management and Urban Policy.
