The Fresno State Marching Band will host its first national caliber band competition, the Sierra Cup Classic, on Saturday, Nov. 7, in Bulldog Stadium from 5 to 10 p.m.

Gary P. Gilroy, director of the Fresno State band, said 17 of the best bands from California and Nevada will be judged in nine categories with awards for the top band in each. A grand champion award will feature a perpetual trophy.

The categories are individual visual performance, ensemble music performance, ensemble visual performance, music general effect, percussion, individual music performance, color guard, visual general effect, and drum major.

California high school bands scheduled to attend are: Bullard (Fresno), Clovis, Clovis West, Buchanan (Clovis), Hanford, Hanford West, Corcoran, Exeter, Selma, East Bakersfield, Delano, Madera, Tulare Western, Diamond Bar, Johansen (Modesto), and Fred C. Beyer (Modesto).

Attending from Reno, Nevada will be Robert McQueen High School.
