California State University, Fresno will honor 100 students who have qualified for the nation’s oldest, largest and most selective collegiate honor society, Phi Kappa Phi. An induction ceremony will begin at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday, March 29, in the Satellite Student Union.
Phi Kappa Phi recognizes academic excellence among college and university students in chapters on nearly 300 campuses throughout the United States, Puerto Rico and the Philippines. Each year, approximately 30,000 members are initiated.
The society was founded in 1897 and is the most selective honor society for all academic disciplines. It is recognized as one of the two most prestigious national collegiate honor societies (the other being Phi Beta Kappa, which recognizes excellence in only the liberal arts).
In addition to the induction of new student members to the honor society, four other individuals will be inducted into the chapter:
• Faculty member — Dr. Fraka Harmsen, professor of Earth and Environmental Sciences
• Administrator — Dr. Ethelynda Harding, director of Teaching, Learning and Technology
• Staff member – Sonya Hildreth, coordinator of the Learning Resource Center
• Alumni – Dr. Peter Mehas, superintendent of Fresno County Schools and a 1962 graduate of Fresno State
The Fresno chapter was established in 1953 and has been honored more than any other chapter for the excellence of its student-recognition programs. The Fresno honor society recognizes academic excellence in all majors at both the undergraduate and graduate level.
Admission to the honor society is by invitation. Superior scholarship and good character are criteria for membership. Undergraduate students must be seniors, have completed one year of on-campus attendance, at least 21 units from Fresno State and a minimum grade-point average (GPA) of 3.5. Graduate students must complete a graduate program with a minimum overall GPA of 3.9.
