The Fresno State Symphony Orchestra, under the baton of Thomas Loewenheim, showcases the work of senior music students Irina Smolyakova and Patrick Martin during a concert on campus.

The orchestra will play familiar music by Schumann, Liszt and Rimsky-Korsakov and also the world premier of “Waking Life” by Martin during the program at 7 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 27.

The piano solo in Schumann’s “Piano Concerto” will be played by Smolyakova, who began taking piano lessons at age 7 in her native Kharkov, Ukraine. After emigrating to the United States, she studied with Fresno State alumna Maria Amirkhanian at Gavilan College in Gilroy before transferring in 2008 to learn under Fresno State piano professor Andreas Werz.

Fresno State music faculty Dr. Kenneth Froelich, Dr. Benjamin Boone and professor Brad Hufft have guided Martin, who has composed across the spectrum from solo pieces to works for orchestra. His plans are to continue studies in London and earn a degree in audio engineering, but first Martin is preparing for his May 7 senior recital.

The symphony’s concert will be performed at the Concert Hall in the Music Building.

Tickets are $15 general; $10 seniors, Fresno State students, faculty and staff.  Visit the Department of Music Web site for more information.
