California State University, Fresno’s Centennial gets centerpiece coverage in the May issue of Fresno Magazine in the final month of the university’s celebration of its first century.

The cover photo is the “Human Hundred,” formed in April 2010 at the kickoff of the Centennial celebration. A group of red-clad Fresno State students, alumni, staff, faculty and friends gathered in the Amphitheater on campus for what became an iconic and historic photo op.

Fresno Magazine editor and publisher Melanie Warner, who became acquainted with Fresno State on a basketball date with her future husband in 1994 and moved to Fresno in 2001, notes that the university generates “a contagious spirit, almost an expectation that governs all local pride to be measured against.”

“I have never seen such a strong sense of pride and connection that truly resonates throughout the entire city that beats as one heart,” Warner writes.

In its articles, Fresno Magazine presents:

  • A profile of alumnus Marcus Nance, a singer who has performed around the world.
  • The Centennial Gala, scheduled Saturday, May 14, at the Save Mart Center on campus.
  • A family with 18 Fresno State grads since Louise Smith-Becker got her degree in teaching in 1918.
