Thanks to an accelerated summer program, 47 nursing students at California State University, Fresno will participate in the Nursing Summer Pinning Ceremony 3-6 p.m. Friday, Aug. 12, at the Satellite Student Union.

Dr. Michael Russler, who chairs the Department of Nursing, will pin the graduates in accordance with nursing tradition and welcome them into their new profession as family and friends observe. He and Professor Dorothy Fraser will speak.

The accelerated program, designed and supported by the College of Health and Human Services and the Division of Continuing and Global Education at Fresno State, enabled the students to complete their work in August. The goal is to enhance their chances of getting a job now rather than waiting until December with the next group graduating.

Graduates will now focus on licensing examinations required to become registered nurses, Russler said. About 60 percent of this cohort has lined up jobs already.

Fresno State’s nursing department offers bachelor’s, credential, master’s and post-master’s programs designed help meet a longstanding regional shortage of registered nurses and nursing administrators and educators.
