Tim DeRuyter is the new Fresno State football coach, hired to lead the program into a new conference while maintaining a high level of classroom achievement by the student-athletes on the team. DeRuyter has been the defensive coordinator at Texas A&M the past two seasons.
Fresno State will move to the Mountain West Conference next fall after competing in the Western Athletic Conference since 1992.
The announcement of DeRuyter’s hiring was made Wednesday, Dec. 14, by Athletics Director Thomas Boeh at an event attended by players, boosters and Fresno State faculty, staff and administrators.
University President John D. Welty said, “We’re happy to welcome Tim DeRuyter to the Fresno State family. After consulting with Director of Athletics Thomas Boeh, meeting Tim and reviewing his record, I’m confident he can build a winning Bulldog football team, keep our student-athletes on track in the classroom, re-energize our longtime fans and attract new ones.
“He steps into big shoes and also the challenge of moving the Bulldogs into a new conference next season,” added Welty. “But you only have to talk with Tim for a few minutes before you’re convinced he has the enthusiasm, experience and dedication to get the job done.”
