Fresno State’s CineCulture film series presents “The Merchant of Venice” at 5 p.m. Friday, Oct. 21, in the Peters Education Center Auditorium. This late 16th century work by William Shakespeare is one of the first plays where a woman becomes the hero of the action because of her brains and not because of her femininity. Why this play was called a “comedy” in Shakespeare’s day is revealed after the performance, brought to life by American actor Al Pacino with co-stars Jeremy Collins and Lyn Collins. The screening commemorates the 500th anniversary of the founding of the Jewish Ghetto in Venice, where the word “ghetto” originated in 1516. Co-sponsors of the event are the Jewish Studies Certificate Program and the Jewish Studies Association. Dr. Ed EmanuEl, professor of theatre arts at Fresno State, will lead the post-screening discussion. The film is rated R and is 131 minutes in length. All CineCulture films screened on campus are free and open to the public. Parking is not enforced after 4 p.m. on Fridays.
