The Fresno State Plant Operations Department reduced water demand from 2013 to 2016 by 30 percent. Doing so saved 111 million gallons of water, energy used to pump water throughout campus and chemicals used to treat water. The department accomplished this by implementing a $250,000 upgrade to the irrigation controllers, which allows for better control of water scheduling. The department also replaced sprinkler heads with low-flow heads, repaired ongoing leaks on campus and injected berms with water retention materials.
