A record 78,473 ears of Fresno State sweet corn were sold during the first weekend of the 2017 harvest – Friday through Sunday, June 2 through 4 – at the Rue and Gwen Gibson Farm Market on campus. The three days generated $31,790 in corn sales.
The previous high was 73,008 ears in 2016. The market began its summer hours Monday: 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. on weekdays, 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Saturdays and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Sundays.
Jeremy Lewis, Gibson Farm Market manager, said 57,148 ears of yellow corn and 21,325 ears of white corn were sold. Friday’s opening day total was a record 38,586 ears sold (36,134 ears of yellow corn and 2,452 ears of white corn in 77 bins). The first day generated a record of $15,834 in sales.
The sweet corn, which sells for 40 cents per ear, is available daily through Labor Day until supplies run out each day. Also available at the student-run market, located at 5368 N Chestnut Ave., are new Fresno State re-usable shopping totebags for $4.49 each.
Proceeds from the Gibson Farm Market support students and programs. Most goods are produced with the help of 130 student employees and 80 classes that use the campus farm to give students hands-on experience. Other products include Fresno State wine, meat, ice cream, nuts, salsa, and syrups.
