CineCulture will present “The Suffragists (Las Sufragistas)” at 5:30 p.m. Friday, April 27, at the Peters Education Center Auditorium at the Student Recreation Center (5010 N. Woodrow Ave.). The post-screening discussion will be led by Ana Cruz Navarro, director of the film. This documentary tells the story of Eufrosina Cruz, an indigenous woman from the Zapotec community of Santa María Quiegolani in the state of Oaxaca, Mexico. The right to full suffrage for women in Mexico was won in 1953, yet, in 2008, Cruz was denied her right to vote and run as municipal president of her community. The denial was based on the grounds that indigenous customary laws prohibit women from participating in electoral processes. After years of struggle for her rights, Cruz is now a representative in Mexico’s federal government and the first indigenous woman to be a member of the Congress of Oaxaca. “The Suffragists” details her political struggle, as well as Mexican women’s long fight for political power. The presentation is sponsored by the College of Arts and Humanities, Aeromexico, the Spanish Program, the Department of Modern and Classical Languages and Literatures and the Department of Chicano and Latin American Studies. “The Suffragists (Las Sufragistas)” is 78 minutes long, in Spanish with English subtitles.
