Living legend Larry Harlow will join the “Salsa Performance: Techniques and Repertoire” students in a free concert on Thursday, July 12, at 8 p.m. at the Concert Hall in the Music Building at Fresno State.

Classically trained, Mr. Harlow is a true living legend of Afro-Cuban music. His specialties include jazz and classical piano, conducting, composition, orchestration, and audio engineering. He plays keyboards, oboe, English horn, flute, bass, vibraphone, and assorted percussion instruments.

“El Judio Maravilloso,” as he is affectionately called by his colleagues, completely revolutionized what is known today as “salsa.” The explosive trumpet/trombone sound of the contemporary salsa bands was developed by Mr. Harlow in the early 1970’s.

He has recorded over 30 CDs and is the subject of a new documentary entitled, “The Golden Age of Salsa Through the Eyes of Larry Harlow.” In April 2000 he was inducted into the Latin Music Hall of Fame.

On Monday, July 16, Harlow will perform at the Lincoln Center in New York.
